Analyzing the “Antitrust” movie
Friday, November 18th, 2005 at 2:22 pmToday i spent time at work watching the old Antitrust movie, wondering how anybody EVER got the funding to make that!? I mean, IMHO it’s an ok movie, but it’s really nerdy, and all about open source, big evil software companies, and IP.
However, i started noticing that there was a lot of SUN related stuff in the movie, and started analyzing a few technical parts of it:

At about 00:23:50 the Synapse CEO comes in with some stolen source code, and Milo says really amazed: waau, amazing compression scheme!. I freeze framed and tried to figure out where the source code could originate from, and guess what i found on SUNs site:
An example of a very simple, multi-threaded HTTP server.
This source is btw shown a couple of times later in the movie, and refered to as the top secret synapse sattelite module! Pretty advanced technology i must say :p

Just a little netbeans, or “SUN One”, “SUN Creator” or whatever they call it

Erasing files from a SEGA Megadrive?! i don’t get it…

Now here’s my personal favorite! This seems to be a combination of:
- Apple PowerBook G3 - 400/66MHz, ATI Rage LT Pro (8MB), 64MB Ram
- GNOME Desktop
- Netscape navigator v4.6
The movie was released in 2001, so at the time of filming the above powerbook was the fastest one available. AFAIK the latest Netscape version for PPC was 4.6, in which they are watching realtime streaming video!? It can probably be done, but i’d really like to see that setup!

The credits screen, which i also find a bit amusing in some way.
As a last thing i looked up the domains skullbocks.com* (used throughout the movie) and skillz.com* (artist website in the credits), and both of them is now one of those nasty multi-purpose search portals, registered by an even nastier company than Synapse!
*The above domains are not clickable links, because i don’t wan’t to contribute to their google ranking in any way!
